Stowell, que toca la guitarra el\u00e9ctrica y ac\u00fastica, naci\u00f3 en Nueva York y creci\u00f3 en Connecticut. Tuvo estudios privados con Linc Chamberland y John Mehegan . Varios a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde conoci\u00f3 al bajista David Friesen en la ciudad de Nueva York. Stowell hizo un viaje a Portland, Oreg\u00f3n, donde vive Friesen, y decidi\u00f3 quedarse. Los dos formaron un d\u00fao en 1976 que grab\u00f3 y realiz\u00f3 giras prol\u00edficas durante siete a\u00f1os, con presentaciones en los Estados Unidos, Canad\u00e1, Europa y Australia. En 1983, Stowell y David Friesen se unieron al flautista Paul Horn y al hijo de Paul, Robin Horn (en la bater\u00eda) para una gira por la Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica . En 1977 Stowell grab\u00f3 su \u00e1lbum debutDeliciosa Dorada ; sus acompa\u00f1antes fueron Jim McNeely , Mike Richmond y Billy Hart\u00a0<\/p>

Stowell ense\u00f1a internacionalmente. Ha sido artista residente en escuelas de Alemania, Indonesia, Argentina, Estados Unidos y Canad\u00e1. Se desempe\u00f1\u00f3 como asistente de direcci\u00f3n e int\u00e9rprete en PDX Jazz Summit de Oregon Public Broadcasting en 1991, y desde 1995 ha sido columnista colaborador de varias revistas, incluidas Down Beat , Guitar Player , Canadian Musician , Soundcheck (Alemania) y Guitar Club ( Italia). En Alemania, ense\u00f1a en Jazz & Rock Schulen Freiburg con Frank Haunschild, con quien toca regularmente.
